Dr. Daniel van Ingen

Daniel van Ingen, Psy.D., is a Licensed Clinical and Sports Psychologist in Florida. He received his BA degree from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota, his MA degree from Saint Mary’s University, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and his Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) from the University of St. Thomas Graduate School of Professional Psychology. His research interests have included anxiety treatment, parenting research, and intellectual disabilities. Clinically, Dr. van Ingen specializes in anxiety and trauma, sports, and burnout in southwest Florida. He manages a private practice called Anxiety Shrinks! His book Anxiety Disorders Made Simple has been endorsed by psychiatrists, family practice physicians, social workers, psychologists, neuropsychologists, and professors alike. He has worked tirelessly as a national speaker traveling speaking 8-hour seminars in over 120 cities and he has presented research at national and international conferences for over 15 years. He blogs anxiety articles and posts weekly parenting podcasts. He has been dubbed the Sarasota Parenting Doctor in his private practice work.
Some History:
Dr. Daniel van Ingen attended the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota where he studied psychology and communication. He was involved in the basketball program but failed for two years in his long-term dream of playing college basketball. Despite disappointment from the failure, he endured and chose to stay involved as a manager and basketball announcer. During this time, he also developed as a student leader on the university campus in a variety of settings. In 1997, he was awarded the University’s Medal of Courage for his service and advocacy for students of color. For his leadership, a tree was planted on the university campus in his honor. He also received the Heart of St. Thomas award, traditionally given to faculty, staff, or a student leader on the All College Council for giving to the spirit of helping for campus betterment.
In 1998, Dr. van Ingen began his Master’s of Arts at Avila University in Kansas City, Missouri and completed his Master's degree in Counseling and Psychological Services at Saint Mary’s University in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He completed his Psy.D. (Doctorate of Counseling Psychology) from the University of St. Thomas Graduate School of Professional Psychology in Minneapolis, Minnesota. While in Minneapolis, he completed practicums/externships at T.E.A.M. (Employee Assistance Counseling) and Hazelden Fellowship Club (renown for treatment of addictions and co-occurring disorders).
In 1999, Dr. van Ingen worked at Chrestomathy, Inc., a day training and habilitation program for adults with intellectual disabilities and challenging behavior and directed the Minneapolis site for five years. In 2006, he started the Chrestomathy research facility, the Center for the Treatment and Study of Intellectual disabilities and Severe mental illness. He served in this capacity as clinical research director for seven years. Dr. van Ingen completed his APA accredited internship at Michigan State University. He then worked as coordinator of the PTSD Clinic at the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan and as assistant director of the New College of Florida Counseling & Wellness Center.
Since 2009, he has provided a range of psychological testing and assessments for IMA Evaluations and has provided therapy services in his private practice, specializing in anxiety treatment. He served as a Consultant and research director at Chrestomathy, Inc.. He is a national speaker for PESI training mental health professionals on the treatment of anxiety disorders of all ages. He was a board advisor and PTSD expert contributor to Selah Freedom, a non-profit working to help sex-trafficking survivors. He is author of four books including Anxiety Disorders Made Simple: Treatment Approaches to Overcome Fear and Build Resiliency. In addition to training therapists on anxiety treatment and managing his private practice, he recently published two new books on parenting: You Are Your Child's Best Psychologist: 7 Keys to Excellence in Parenting & a 40-Day Devotional for Parents: A Parenting Doctor's Call to Fill Your Children's Lamp with Oil Through Prayer and Action.
Dr. van Ingen has worked with a variety of patient populations – children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. He has extensive experience in individual, group, and couples psychotherapy for a variety of problems – including depression, relationship problems, and adjustment difficulties. His specialties are anxiety disorders, psychological trauma, and intellectual disabilities. He also has extensive experience doing psychological testing and assessment that includes learning and intellectual disabilities.
Dr. van Ingen a registrant of the National Registry of Health Service Providers in Psychology. He is an active participant in national psychology meetings with a history of attendance and presentations at the American Psychological Association Annual Convention.
